Thompson v. Calderon
In an extraordinary decision filed on August 3,
1997, the en banc court recalled a panel's mandate in a death penalty case, and stayed the
execution. Just three days later the United States Supreme Court granted certiorari. On
April 29, 1998, the Supreme Court reversed in a 5-4 decision. The case ended with
Thompson's execution on July 14, 1998. Follow the chronology of what happened, and read
